A Q and A with...

Last updated : 11 May 2005 By Smallsy
Secondly i spoke to Andy Parsons editor at http://www.sheffieldwednesday-mad.co.uk and he gave us his thoughts on tomorrows game as well.

1. Tell us a bit about yoursel, name, age, where your from etc...

I am 25 years old and been following The Owls since I was 7. I am Sheffield born and bred and I have been going home and away with Wednesday for ages now. It's been a long and often fruitless ride!

2. What was the first football match you attended?

My dad took me to watch Wednesday v Manchester United at Hillsborough in '87 - we lost 4-2 but Bryan Robson scored an absolute Frank Sinclair-esqe own goal!

3. Which have been the best and worst matches you've been to?

Best - Wednesday v United in the FA Cup semi-final in '93 for obvious reasons, what a great day out. The worst is difficult as many of them would have come in the last three or four seasons but I would say the recent 3-0 reverse at Hartlepool was pretty heartbreaking.

4. How would you assess your season, achievement, underachievement or just about right?

It's good to see Wednesday winning again to be honest. Many of our fans think we have a divine right to win the title and be in the Premiership again but that's a long way off. I think in September, if someone said we would have Paul Sturrock as manager, we would be very good away from home and in the play-offs, most of us would have taken that.

5. how would you asses Brentford's season, achievement, underachievement or just about right?

Brentford have been brilliant this season, I have been mightily impressed with them. Martin Allen has done an excellent job and he is undoubtedly a very underrated manager. Many expected The Bees to be top half this season but from what I have seen of them, they play good attacking football and have good young players and deserve their place.

6. What's been your best Wednesday related moment this season?

Beating Hull I think. We were awful against them at Hillsborough and we needed to get something out of the game at the KC Stadium. If we play like that against Brentford, we should win easily. Beating them 2-1 was absolutely fantastic!

7. Playoffs?! Bit dodgy arent they? What would you say is the defining factor which would lead to your sucess?

Our away form, by a mile. We have possibly the best squad on paper in the league when we are injury free - whether they work together is a different matter! We have missed Graeme Lee at times and both strikers Adam Proudlock and Steve MacLean. But we can show spirit when Sturrock gives us a kick up the backside. As for the play-offs, I have never experienced them so I am
looking forward to the atmosphere!

8. What did you make of the 2 regular season games between our teams?

We dominated both to be honest. At our place we couldn't finish and you got two goals on the counter attack while at Griffin Park, we played well but were terrible in defence. But Brentford's spirit impressed me, so did Rankine and Burton in attack.

9. Who's the Sheff Wed player we need to watch out for?

I think if we play well, our wide players JP McGovern and Chris Brunt could be vital. They are both very good at getting crosses in and McGovern has been our most consistent player of the season. James Quinn is finally coming into form though and hopefully he will prove a threat.

10. Who's the Brentford player you feel you need to watch out for?

Burton is excellent - at this level anyhow. Very quick and a quality
finisher. I also like the look of Tabb. He scored a great goal the other day and we will have to watch his runs.

11. What's your team like generally? Strong areas, weak areas, backroom staff, manager etc...

We have the best goalkeeper in the league in David Lucas. He is just coming back from injury and is vital to our team. In defence, Lee Bullen is a good leader and Paul Heckingbottom has improved significantly from earlier in the season. In midfield Glenn Whelan is excellent and we sorely miss him when he is out while in attack, Drew Talbot's pace could prove important if he
plays. I think we have the best manager outside the Premiership, I am not being biased here but I think the way Sturrock has turned us around is a fantastic achievement. We seem to have forgotten about the troubles in the boardroom but I can see that people will be shouting for Dave Allen's head in the summer!

12. Make a prediction for the first leg at Hillsbrough on Thursday...

I never make predictions as far as Wednesday are concerned - but I would like to see them win!

Cheers to Andy too for some excellent answer we'll be speaking to him prior to the second leg as well.
