Figures released today shown on sky sports and on the football leagues official websites today have shown an alarming trend in fees paid to football agents for transactions over the past year.

The fees are included in all transfers, contract renewals, loan deals and contract terminations. A total of £2.3m was paid to agents between January and June 2005, which is 1.4m up on the same period in 2004.

Spending on agents as a whole was at 7.8m for which league one clubs accounted for 7.6% of the total fees just over half a million pounds.

After the release of the report, League Chairman Lord Mawhinney has sent a letter to the FA asking for a change in guidelines which would mean players footing the bill for agents fees, a move which has been backed by all clubs this morning.

He said,

"Too much money is leaving football through payments to agents and League clubs have made it clear to me that they want a strong regulatory framework governing how agents fees are paid."

The highest spenders in the country were Leeds United, followed by Leicester and Wolves as they strive to reach the Premiership. Only 13 clubs did not pay any money for agents for deals over this period and 15 clubs commited less than £10,000 ot agents during the 12 months.

Here are some other statistics about deals in League One,

- There were 964 transactions carried out and 9.6% involved agents

- Clubs commited to spend a total of £595,870 on agents fees during the 12 months.

-19 clubs commited to pay for the services of licenced agents and only five clubs (Blackpool, Colchester, Huddersfeild, Stockport and Wrexham) did not pay a penny towards fees.
