Aston Villa fire Steven Gerrard

Aston Villa have confirmed Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect in the wake of their defeat to Fulham.

The loss at Craven Cottage was the latest in a string of poor results for Gerrard, who has overseen a run of one Premier League win in eight games. Villa are now 17th in the table, only above the relegation zone on goals scored.

Gerrard had previously impressed with Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership title before succeeding Dean Smith as Villa manager in November 2021.

Summer signings Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara have suffered long term injuries while drama over the club captaincy - Gerrard removed Tyrone Mings and appointed John McGinn - also provided an unwanted off-field distraction.

A statement reads: “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”

Gerrard's assistant, Michael Beale, left Villa Park in the summer to become Queens Park Rangers manager. He has since rejected an approach from Wolves, who are backing interim boss Steve Davis until 2023.
