Brentford 2 - 1 Sunderland

As supporters of Brentford ran onto the pitch at just before 5pm last night, it signified one of the greatest days in the football clubs history. With new owners taking their place in the stands and new optimism about the financially security of Brentford, those wearing the red and white stripes caused prehaps the upset of the year, beating Premiership Sunderland 2-1.

Having taken the lead only to be pegged back a minute later the Bees kept battling and through DJ Campbell scored in the 88th minute of the game to put their names in the hat for the fifth round, amazingly for the second season running.

What the chairman said?

Never one to shy away from the media, new joint Bees owner said,

"After a wonderful day it makes me realise how lucky I am to be the chairman of Brentford football club. With all thats happened over the last two weeks this has just topped the joy of me taking over here."

What the manager said?

Martin Allen was all smiles as he spoke to the press but giving his honest and frank answer he said,

"As a manager I'm not sure I can enjoy any game.

"It won't be till I get away from the ground and sit in the car that I will allow myself a smile"

Speaking on his goalscoring hero he said,

"Dudley has done well today and he's shown us all what he can do. He's still a bit rough round the edges but he works hard both in training and on the pitch and there is certainly a lot more to come from him"

What the opposition manager said?

On match of the day Mick McCarthy was full of praise for Brentford,

"Oh of course they deserved to win today, there no denying that they were the better team"

Feeling that his team was guilty of poor defending he said,

"We gave them a helping hand but they got in amongst us and took us out of our stride and we had no response to that."

Speaking on Campbell he said,

"His pace is frightening and we didn't know how to deal with him at all, Martin Allen has done really well to find a player like that in the 'lower' leagues."

What the players said?

DJ Campbell after his cup heroices spoke to the press saying,

"Today has been wonderful for me, after what I achieved in the FA Cup last season playing against Newcastle and all this has been a dream come true."

"Sunderland are an excellent team, they have an excellent manager and amazing support which has made this even better for me."


Speaking on his manager Cambell said,

"The manager has been great for me you know, I'm thankful that he gave me a chance to come to Brentford and show what I can do."

What the experts said?

Lee Dixon speaking on match of the day, described the event at Griffin Park as ,

"an excellent Cup tie"

"Brentford deserved the victory and they gave Sunderland a fright, Ok so Sunderland's defense didnt play very well but DJ Campbell's pace made the difference."


Gavin Peacock another pundit for the BBC said,

"Brentford worked hard today and they deserved the victory because they never gave up."

"They play in their managers mould and I wouldnt be supprised if they get drawn at home in the new round, that another sensation might be on the cards."
