Brentford maintained their 100 per cent home league record with a stunning 2-0 victory over Oldham. Goals from Isaiah Rankin in first-half injury time and a suberb thumping Deon Burton header a minute after the break continued Oldham's disappointing streak of never having won at Griffin Park.
The visitors however were the dominant team in the first half, with Jamaican international Jermaine Johnson going close early on. Bees goalkeeper Stuart Nelson kept the scores level when Johnson's effort was well saved on 39 minutes.
The Latics were guilty of not capitalising on their possession and should have gone behind on the half hour after some good work from Burton who put in Jay Tabb. With Oldham keeper Craig Mawson stranded out of his area, Tabb rounded him but failed to find the target.
With the half drawing to a close, a Nelson goal kick was missed by everyone except the alert Rankin who found the target despite Mawson scrambling back for a 1-0 lead at the break.
Within barely a minute of the second half, Brentford had doubled their lead. Burton got hold of the ball after the restart, running at pace at the Latics defence before finding Tabb on the right. Tabb's precision cross found an unmarked Burton who made no mistake with his header for 2-0.
That really was game over, but the Bees went looking for a third with Christian Hargreaves and Sam Sodje both denied by Mawson. Despite Oldham's efforts to regroup, they were unable to sustain any attack of significance, and were thwarted in the end by the rampant Bees.
